Reduce False Positives and Unblock Your IP Address with CAPTCHA

The most awaited feature by many clients is the advanced CAPTCHA system, which helps reduce false positives and make sure that legit visitors can reach your website. The CAPTCHA is a feature intended to distinguish human from machine input and protect websites from the spam and different types of automated abuse.

If your IP address or an IP address of a visitor is added to the Firewall Grey List (the access is blocked), then the Imunify360 CAPTCHA allows the IP address to be easily unblocked with just a click of a button. When trying to access a website from a blocked IP address, Imunify360 redirects to the CAPTCHA protection page, where the IP address can be unblocked after passing the reCAPTCHA verification by ticking its checkbox.

Scheduled Migration of the Server "Neptune" (Shared/Reseller Hosting)

When will the migration take place?

The migration of the server "Neptune" is scheduled to start on 26 July 2017 18:00 CEST and estimated to be completed by 27 July 2017 09:00 CEST.

We kindly ask you not to make changes to your hosting account (incl. websites, emails, settings, databases, files, etc.) while the transfer is in progress.

Where can I follow the progress and updates?

We’ll keep our Network Status page updated with the latest status. Updates will be posted regularly until the migration is completed.

What can I do to speed-up the migration process?

Due to the large amount of accounts and data that need to be transferred, the migration will require much time, attention and planning from our side.

To help us complete the migration faster and more efficiently, we kindly ask you to remove any data that you may no longer require. Examples: old backups and archives, expired domains, outdated scripts, unused cPanel accounts, etc.

This would be greatly appreciated and would help us a lot.

Will there be downtime?

Under normal circumstances, there won’t be any major downtime. We’ll try to manage the migration as seamless as possible, but exceptions cannot be entirely excluded.

There are two common exceptions:

  1. Domains that point to external nameservers/DNS
  2. Domains that are behind CloudFlare (see next question for more details)

You can find the nameservers that your domain should point to in our client area under My Services or in the hosting account information email. A copy of this email can be found in the Email History.

Generally, we cannot guarantee the full functionality and reliability of our service for domains that don't use our nameservers/DNS. Please point your domain(s) to nameservers that are managed by us to prevent any service disruptions.

My domain uses CloudFlare. What should I do?

For domains behind CloudFlare with Full DNS setup, it is recommended to temporarily point the domain to our nameservers (instead of the CloudFlare nameservers) until we complete the migration.

NOTE: This step is only necessary if you want your domain to be available during the migration process. You can skip this step if you can tolerate a possible service disruption while the migration takes place.

  • Domains pointing to our nameservers and using CloudFlare CNAME setup:
    No action is necessary, as the DNS records can be updated from our side.
  • Domains pointing to CloudFlare's nameservers and using CloudFlare Full DNS setup:
    Please temporarily point the domain(s) to our nameservers during the migration.

The reason why this step is necessary is that an account, once migrated, will be locked on the old server and will receive a temporary IP address on the new server during the migration. After we finish the migration of all accounts, the data center will route the IP subnets from the old server to the new server. Then we will manually assign the original IPs to each account. Until this process is completed, the domains that don't use our nameservers may be restricted or unreachable.

Do I need to change the IP address or nameservers of my domain(s)?

Short answer: No, all current IPs will be routed to the new server after the migration is completed.

All IP addresses/subnets will be routed to the new server once we complete the migration of all accounts. During the migration, the accounts will be assigned to a temporary shared IP address and switched back to their original IP after the migration is completed.

Although the new server will have a different hostname and different nameservers, the legacy hostname and nameservers can continue to be used and will be pointed to the new server.

How will the migration take place, described in simple steps?

  1. Account gets transferred to the new server using the cPanel Transfer Tool in Express mode.
  2. Account gets locked on the old server to prevent further changes.
  3. Account gets activated on the new server. The domain DNS records are updated to point to the new server, on a temporary shared IP address.
  4. After all accounts have been transferred, we will request the data center to route the IP subnets from the old server to the new server.
  5. The final step is to assign the original IP address to each account individually on the new server, in order to achieve the same IP address and DNS configuration as on the old server.

Do I need to do anything after the migration?

You should make sure that all your data was transferred completely and everything works properly after the migration is completed. If you notice any issues, please contact us as soon as possible.

Is there a risk of data loss?

The migration should not cause loss of data. cPanel account transfers have always been accurate and reliable in many of our past experiences.

However, there is one minor exception. Once your account is transferred and restored on the new server, everything that happens in the meantime on the old server cannot be replicated. This is why it's so important to point your domain to our nameservers, as we can immediately point the domain to the appropriate IP address.

As a precaution, a R1Soft backup of the old server will be generated before and after the transfer is done. We’ll keep the backups of the old server for up to 2 weeks.

Will the new server run different software? Will there be compatibility issues?

The new server will run the latest software versions available. We will continue to use the combination of cPanel, CloudLinux and LiteSpeed Web Server.

There will be some notable differences that might lead to compatibility issues for some accounts/websites:

  • The new server runs MariaDB 10.1, which is a drop-in replacement for MySQL. It is faster, more stable and a better alternative to MySQL. The switch to MariaDB shouldn’t cause issues for existing MySQL databases. Full compatibility details are described in this official article.
  • Because EasyApache 3 is deprecated and will be removed from cPanel next year, the new server will run EasyApache 4.
    This will result some changes to our hosting environment and the addition/removal of some features:
    • Apache user data includes cannot be migrated. All ModSecurity rules that were disabled on the old server will need to be requested again, if necessary (i.e. if 403 Forbidden errors occur).
    • Custom MIME types break sites when the system migrates to EasyApache 4. If you have defined custom MIME types in your .htaccess file(s), please remove these rules before the migration.
    • FastCGI will be replaced by suPHP because EasyApache 4 supports FastCGId on an experimental basis only. This change should not cause any issues to the websites, as both environments are similar.
    • Tomcat compatibility and support removed. EasyApache 4 does not support Tomcat. cPanel, Inc. does not plan to support Tomcat with EasyApache 4 in the immediate future. To vote for Tomcat support in EasyApache 4, visit cPanel's Feature Request site.
    • More details are available in the cPanel Documentation: Current Status of EasyApache 4
  • The new server runs the operating system CloudLinux 7 (instead of 6).
    • Ruby on Rails is currently not officially supported by cPanel on CloudLinux/CentOS 7. It will be available with cPanel v66, which is expected to be released at the end of August 2017. Alternatively, you can use the Ruby Selector that comes with CloudLinux (in cPanel » Software). Some apps might need to be reconfigured.
  • Due to lack of demand, certain compatibility issues with cPanel and increased support requirements, RVSkin will no longer be available.

As always, we highly recommend all clients to upgrade all scripts/software to the latest stable versions to ensure full compatibility and close security vulnerabilities.

Why is the migration to a new server necessary?

Our servers are leased for a specific period (usually 1 to 3 years). The warranty of essential server parts is often limited to 2 years.

As the server gets older, the risk of a hardware failure rises. To prevent hardware failures that would cause long outages, we prefer to reduce this risk by deploying new servers at regular intervals. This is one of the reasons why we never had an outage caused by a server hardware failure in almost 13 years. In addition to this, we want to keep up with the latest technology and provide an optimal level of performance.

What is the advantage of this migration?

One of the greatest advantages is that we will have a newer server with a faster processor (CPU) and faster memory (DDR4 RAM) available, which will result better performance and reliability.

Introducing AutoSSL: Free SSL Certificates For All Domains

Introducing AutoSSL

We’re excited to announce the activation of AutoSSL, a feature that will contribute to enhanced security and performance by providing free SSL certificates for all domains hosted at MaxterHost. It is a fantastic addition to our feature list.

The internet is steadily moving towards the secure HTTPS as a default protocol. A while ago, an SSL certificate was only necessary for websites that processed sensitive data. However, nowadays having an SSL certificate is an important factor for the search engine standing and a requirement for using the latest and fastest HTTP/2 protocol.

What is AutoSSL?

AutoSSL is the solution to one of the biggest pain points that exists for every cPanel & WHM user: SSL purchasing, installation and renewal. With AutoSSL, there are no more forms to fill out, no more certificates to manually copy into place and no more renewal fees. Your websites are automatically secured with a Domain Validated SSL certificate. Perhaps more exciting is the fact that your coverage will never lapse, because at expiration time a new SSL is requested and automatically installed.

Best part of it: The SSL certificates are totally free of charge and provide the same level of security as a regular commercial SSL certificate.

The SSL certificates are currently issued and signed by cPanel, Inc. (Powered by Comodo).

How do you enable AutoSSL?

AutoSSL is enabled automatically for all accounts hosted on our servers.

The SSL certificates are issued automatically for domains and subdomains that pass a Domain Control Validation (DCV) test, which proves ownership of the domain.

Existing domains that point to our server should already have an SSL certificate issued by now. When you add a new domain or account, AutoSSL will issue an SSL certificate within 24 hours.

How does the Domain Control Validation (DCV) work?

As part of the Domain Control Validation (DCV), an automatically-generated plain text file will be placed inside the document root of your domain (usually inside the “public_html” folder). The SSL Certificate Authority attempts to fetch this file to make sure that the domain is hosted on our server. After successful validation, the SSL certificate is automatically issued and installed.

To pass the DCV test, you should assure that:

  • The domain is valid and points to our nameservers
  • The text file can be accessed publicly (i.e. no password protection is in place, no htaccess rules deny access, the permissions are set correctly, etc.)
  • If there are any faulty rules in your .htaccess file, the system will be unable to initiate the validation process

How can I check if I have an SSL certificate installed?

There are various methods to verify the existence and validity of an SSL certificate. You can go to cPanel » SSL/TLS and check if there’s already an SSL certificate stored and installed. Another way to verify is to run an SSL test at Qualys SSL Labs: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/

I already have an SSL certificate. Will AutoSSL replace it?

AutoSSL will only replace SSL certificates that are invalid, self-signed, or are due to expire within 15 days. If you don’t want AutoSSL to replace your existing SSL certificate, please make sure that it’s installed correctly and it is renewed at least 16 days before expiration.

Can I access cPanel, WHM and Webmail using my domain now?

Yes, AutoSSL has SNI support for cPanel, WHM and Webmail to allow you to access these services through your own domain, instead of our server’s hostname. This was a feature awaited by many of our clients.

My domain has CloudFlare enabled. Why doesn’t it have an SSL certificate installed?

Domains behind CloudFlare cannot pass the DCV test, thus AutoSSL cannot issue SSL certificates for these domains. However, CloudFlare provides free SSL certificates through Universal SSL. To enable SSL/HTTPS for a domain behind CloudFlare, you should issue a CloudFlare Origin SSL in CloudFlare’s control panel and manually install it in cPanel. There’s currently no automated way to do this, unfortunately.

Scheduled Upgrade to PHP 5.6

With the PHP 5.5 branch reaching the end of its support time-frame, we will be upgrading all servers that are still running PHP 5.5 as the native version to PHP 5.6.

The upgrade to PHP 5.6 is scheduled to take place on 02 September 2016.

Most improvements in PHP 5.6 have no impact on existing code. There are a few incompatibilities and new features that should be considered, but overall the upgrade to PHP 5.6 should be seamless for almost all websites.

What effects could the upgrade have on your website and scripts?

If you have a rather old website and your scripts aren’t up-to-date, this might cause compatibility issues, where PHP errors and warnings would occur. These errors are normally logged in the file "error_log" inside the "public_html" folder and its sub-folders.

How should you prepare for the upgrade?

You should make sure that all your scripts are upgraded to the latest version available and are compatible with PHP 5.6. Not only is this required to assure compatibility with the latest PHP standards, but it’s also very important and essential in order to protect your website from any possible security vulnerabilities.

Many popular scripts (WordPress, Joomla, Magento, etc.) can be easily updated using Softaculous, our free script auto-installer, which you can find inside cPanel under the Software/Services group. To import an existing installation, please follow the import guide and then run the upgrade by following the upgrade guide.

If you're a developer or have a custom website programmed in PHP, there's an official guide for migrating from PHP 5.5. to PHP 5.6.

How you can keep using an older, unsupported PHP version

For all clients who aren't prepared for the upgrade to PHP 5.6 yet, we offer the possibility to enable an older PHP version for your account, with the help of CloudLinux HardenedPHP. If you still require PHP 5.5 until you upgrade your scripts/website, you can enable it under cPanel » Select PHP Version.

However, please note that it's highly recommended to use the latest supported version of PHP for security and performance reasons. An older PHP version should only be enabled temporary, during the transitional phase while you upgrade your scripts/website.

cPanel Security Policy Temporary Disabled

Due to an incompatibility between cPanel 54 and our client area system (WHMCS), we have temporary disabled the security policy that limits access from trusted IPs. The security questions no longer appear when you login from an unknown IP address.

We have already reported this bug to WHMCS and await the investigation of their developers and a solution. The security questions will be re-enabled once these compatibility issues have been fixed.
